Upcoming Events Federal Hiring Practices are Evolving - Stay Informed

The 51ԹϺCareer Center is closely monitoring the rapidly changing environment with federal executive agency hiring and its impact on our students and alumni.

There is a hiring freeze affecting most executive agencies that has been extended to July 15, 2025.There are some exceptions (e.g., for National Security agencies) but most internship and full-time hiring has been paused. Our advisors are here to support students and alumni facing internship and job loss and uncertainty. Explore the events and resources below to identify options, build networks, and prepare job search materials.

On-Going Support Available to Students and Alumni

  • Drop-In Advising: Monday-Friday, 1-3pm ET in Bender Library, Collaborative Room1.

SPA advisors are also available in Kerwin Hall on Tuesdays, 10am-12pm and Wednesdays 1-3pm ET.  The SIS Office of Career Development offers SIS-specific drop-ins, including new slots specifically for those impacted.  

  •  1:1 Advising* (In-Person/Online): Schedule a longer appointment through Handshake for individualized support with job or internship searches, application materials, career planning, and more. Available during business and evening hours (Eastern Time). 

  • Career Education Programming and Recorded Workshops:  Students and alumni are also invited to our standard programming on networking, job fair preparation, and more, listed on Handshake. Additionally, recorded sessions on these and other topics are available on 

  • LinkedIn and AlumniFire: 51ԹϺAlumni are eager to help! The 51ԹϺnetwork is strong: use LinkedIn or to identify opportunities, conduct informational interviews, and gain support in your search. Search the “Alumni” tab on .

  • ᲹԻ󲹰:  Handshake has thousands of active local and national job and internship opportunities, in addition to resources, templates, and event listings. All current students have Handshake accounts. Need to set up your alumni account? Email careercenter@american.edu for help.

The NY Times shared thathas partnered with the AFL-CIO, Democracy Forward, and other organizations to powerRise Up: Federal Workers Legal Response Network.

The new network will provide legal consultations with pro bono lawyers for fired or laid off federal workers - union & non-union.
